Self Sufficient, Green Government

by Bucktowndusty

One would think that after 41 years of operations someone in the United States Department of Energy would have said, "Hey, let's mandate that the federal government get 100% of its power from domestic, renewable, nonpolluting sources – and while we're at it, why don't we just do it ourselves."

The Department of Energy's website brags that America can use "wind to generate 20 percent of the nation’s electricity by 2030."

I commend them for doing something and "shattering records" as they say, but this is still a snail's pace to becoming energy self sufficient and pollution free.

If we can spend a trillion dollars on Iraq for national security, surely we can do the same with wind and solar power networks spanning the country. We should at least spend more than several hundred million on peace meal projects here and there as the department has done in the past.

The America of old mobilized for WWII and created more weaponry than the mind can imagine within a few years time. We should be able to reach a 100% renewable, clean usage rate in 10 years.

Our government needs to set the example. They need to create their own power supply network. They can even sell surplus power to corporate power suppliers. Imagine that, our government actually redistributing self-created energy wealth.

I read in the Washington Post several weeks ago that our government mandated that Maryland power companies must have 9% of their power coming from wind or solar sources by 2020. With lobbying, a reluctance of corporations to pass off too much cost to consumers, and a reluctance of consumers to pay too much for an abrupt clean energy switch, this is the best snail pace we can get by doing business the normal way.

I'm not advocating nationalizing our power supply. This is something quite different. We would have two power systems; one that the government runs and uses for its own purposes, and a private sector power system. As anybody knows, competition creates a better and cheaper product. I don't know about you, but after looking at the gas sign today, I'm ready for a change.

The Trinity Connection

by A. Hamilton

So let me get this straight.

Obama is crying, boo-hoo, boo-hoo – if you stop connecting me with all of my wacky friends (including convicted bombers, Palestinian terrorists and racist preachers, whom he have been friends with most of his life), I'll stop fraternizing with them by quitting my church.

And yet, each time he exhales he connects John McCain with President Bush, a person McCain has been at odds with his entire political career.

Think carefully about this election. We don't want another four years of a Carter Administration's failed policies.
